Costs associated with recent Olympic Games
Hosting the Olympic Games is not for tightwad states. Even for the world’s richest countries, and even those that are prudent about spending, the resources required to host the Olympics are extreme. Here’s a snapshot of hefty line items of recent hosts:
- Beijing spent roughly 14 billion on upgrades alone
- Atlanta spent 372 million in infrastructural upgrades, needing little to rise to IOC standards
- Salt Lake City Winter Olympics operating costs in 2002 totaled 1 billion
- Athens spent over 931 million in security costs in 2004
Considering prevailing security costs alone of 931 million billion for Athens in 2004, no nation can afford this level of spending without also investing in sustainable long-term benefits.
