SUSTAINABILITY AND THE 2014 WORLD CUP

The importance of sustainability is increasingly becoming an critical component to hosting a successful event. Although Brazil experienced a terrible logy against Germany, its sustainability initiatives are still being measured. Below are a few initiatives that are being considered:

Recycling  

22 tons of recycled waste have been collected to date, and could be sold at $2.80/lb.

Resource efficiency and renewable energy 

6 out of 12 stadiums have been LEED certified. A couple major stadiums have installed photovoltaic panels (PV)

Urban transport and mobility

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system has not been fully completed. Investment was cut from 5.4 billion to 3.6 billion.

Carbon emissions

27.5 million tons of CO2 will be released in the atmosphere in preparation and during the games.
